Brisbane Formula 500 - Iverson Goes Back to Back

It was far from easy, but Kaydon Iverson last Saturday night at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway made it back-to-back KRE F500 Championship Series round wins.

The current Queensland Champion had qualified on pole position for the feature race but had to sit in second behind inside second-row starter Charlie Brown for the opening two-thirds of the race distance before Iverson chased after Brown, who had begun to struggle with a deflating left-front tyre, and executed a pass for the lead on lap 10. Soon after Brown had lost the lead, Ryan Skennar passed Brown for second place. Once out in front, Iverson stayed in that position for the remaining five laps and claimed the win.

At the fall of the chequered flag, Iverson defeated Skennar and a struggling Brown in second and third place respectively.

Rookie James Kennedy impressed many by finishing just off the podium in fourth ahead of Scott Farmer, Phill Roberts, Ken Newton, Kristin Brown, Royce Harvey and Adrian Farrell in 10th. The final finishers were Brad Vee and Garry Edwards.

It is encouraging to note that all 12 feature-race starters managed to finish, and it was only Edwards who went down a lap on the leaders.

In the heat-race action, Kristin Brown, Iverson and Skennar collected wins. Despite not recording wins, Charlie Brown, Kennedy and Roberts showed solid form throughout the heat races.

The hard-luck story of the night was 17-year-old rookie Piper Ogilvie. With only Junior Quarter Midgets experience to fall back on, she last weekend made the move in the Formula 500 class aboard the Qld # 51 car driven last season by Brooke Wanless. After completing her two heat races, Ogilvie was unable to take her place in the feature-race field due to feeling ill. Another unlucky driver was opening round podium finisher Ryan McNamara who also succumbed to illness after the opening heat race and it consequently brought his night to a premature end.

The fourth KRE F500 Championship Series round is going to be held at Toowoomba’s Hi-Tec Oils Speedway on the Saturday night of December 5.
