Abbottstown, Pa. - 6/27 - A rare but self-induced mistake on Saturday provided all the incentive Tyler Walton needed to rebound with a convincing PA 600 Speedweek victory at Lincoln Speedway on Sunday.
"Man, I needed to do this so much after last night," shared Walton, who spun by himself in the A-Main during Trail-Way's Speedweek Opener. "I told the guys to give me a chance, and I'll pick us up. This is awesome!"
Walton, from Mifflintown, Pa., started on the pole of the 25-lap A-Main, with Ben Murphy on the outside of row one. Murphy grabbed the early lead, with Walton on his heels. The lead changed hands on lap seven, as Walton found just enough room to gun his Juniata Beverage/ Hyper No. 14T under Murphy as the duo blasted off turn two. That turned out to be the race-winning pass, although the action behind the leader was hot and heavy, and a few late race cautions made things interesting at the head of the pack.
There was no doubt, though...this one belonged to Walton. With each restart, he simply motored away from Heath Hehnly, who wrestled the runner-up spot from Murphy on the 14th circuit. "This felt like such a long race," said Walton afterward. "Then I saw Heath's number on the scoreboard, and I got nervous."
He didn't have to worry about Hehnly or anyone else. "I should have gone with a little less stagger; we were too free on entry," explained Hehnly. "But Tyler was so good tonight, I think I could have run flat out around this place and still not caught him."
Walton cruised to the checkered flag, with Hehnly claiming second and a fast-closing Jerrod Wilson finishing third. Murphy and Jim Brookens rounded out the top five.
On a steamy Sunday, 78 teams signed in for 600 Speedweek competition. Just as the fifth heat race was lining up, a brief but fairly heavy rain shower halted the proceedings. The show was delayed for almost an hour, before qualifying resumed around 8:30 p.m.
The first eleven laps of the A-Main went clean and green before the yellow waved for Tyler Esh and Australia's Ben McLeod, who tangled in turn three. The caution lights would blink on three more occasions during the 25-lapper, and there was one red flag incident when Brett Schoenly flipped off turn four. Schoenly was uninjured in the mishap.
