Saturday the 19th June saw the who’s who of West Australian Formula 500 racers, supporters and sponsors converge on Ascot Quays for the presentation of awards to the many people who participated in the 2009/10 season. An impressive crowd of over 100 people were on hand and many were impressed with the amount of planning that had gone into an entertaining night, celebrating the highs and lows of an action packed year for everyone involved.
Steven Ellement needed to bring a trailer for all his trophies as expected taking out the WA State Title at Northam, 1st in the West Coast Series, Tied best presented car with Jeff Hedington, The Drivers driver award, the Fairest and Best and also was presented with the clean sweep award for winning all heats and the feature in one night (West Coast Rnd 1) along with Daniel Harding (West Coast Rnd 6). Other winners on the night included Cody Turacchio who received the Hard Charger award after passing 13 cars in the WA State title final, Matt Watkins got the nod for the Chief Stewards award, Best presented car and crew went to Jeff Hedington, the Encouragement award went to veteran racer Bryan Mullings and Most Improved driver was taken out by Todd Nathan. Trevor Harding Jnr was the obvious choice for Rookie of the Year with some great performances including winning the 2010 Bunny Burrowes Memorial, a great first up performance at the 2010 Australian Title in Alice Springs which was taken out by his brother Daniel in fine style and several podium finishes at the Motorplex and West Coast rounds.
Committee members Cate Bott and Deb Smith were presented with flowers for their outstanding services to the division. Deb attended all West Coast rounds as the Judge timekeeper and also has her hands full as secretary of Formula 500’s WA for the first time this season while Cate fulfilled the position of Liaison Officer this year which will prove to be an important role in coming months as we move forward with track negotiations for our upcoming season which already unofficially is looking to be our best yet. Congratulations to all people who received awards and a huge thank you has to go to committee members Dave Hedington, Brad Warwick, Cate Bott and Deb Smith for doing all of the organizing that went into the night. A special thanks also to Ross “Hollywood” Heywood for being the guest DJ for the night and Jason Priolo for putting together a great compilation of the seasons highlights displayed on the big screen for all to enjoy. A great night had by everybody and as we all spend the coming months relaxing and also more importantly planning for next season, the committee will be busying themselves with huge plans in progress especially for the 2010/11 West Coast Series. Stay tuned for that one.
